Healthy People Make a Healthy World
Your Body Was Designed To Move
What is health?
Health, according to the World Health Organization definition, is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Just because you do not have a disease does not mean you are healthy. To be truly healthy means you have strength and vitality in many aspects of your life. True health does not happen by accident. It takes intention, commitment,
and effort. It means understanding what health means and committing to the actions you need to take to reach it.
Why is your health important?
Think about it. If the people in a society are sick, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually, the society does not have much chance of being healthy. Sick people make a sick community. On the other hand, healthy people make a healthy community. By committing to taking care of yourself, you are doing your part to make the world a better place.
What are the aspects of health?
Health,as we are talking about it today, has three aspect—physical, mental, and spiritual. We will look at each of these categories and discuss ways to improve your health in each of these areas. Your body carries your soul through this lifetime. It is a gift from your Creator. I believe it is your obligation to return it back to your Creator in the
best condition possible.
Physical Health
Taking care of your physical health refers to actions you do in your daily life to care for your body. I covered them in more detail a few weeks ago about the article on romance and self-love. Here are some essential
self-care strategies to be in the best physical condition possible to face any challenges that come up in your future.
• Eat well. Choose natural and healthy foods.
• Exercise. Your body was designed to move. Walk, stretch, go to the gym, or run. Just get off the sofa and MOVE.
•Get some sun. Sunshine on your skin helps your body make vitamin D to build strong bones and it also helps to boost your mood.
• Rest. Work and play hard but get enough sleep.
• Drink. Water is essential for health. Drink plenty of water every day.
Mental Health
When I talk about mental health, I am referring to the way you are thinking and feeling. Someone with good mental health is thinking clearly, solving problems creatively, and having a steady mood. Someone with good mental health knows that feelings are temporary and change
regularly.
To take care of your mental health:
•Use your five senses. According to the American Psychological Association, you can stay calm and energized by appealing to the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. Listen to music that lifts your mood, place flowers where you will see and smell them,
massage your hands and feet, or sip a warm drink.
• Do something meaningful. Do things that challenge your creativity and make you feel productive, whether or not you get paid for it – things like volunteering to help others, drawing, writing, or playing an instrument.
• Develop an attitude of gratitude. Think about the things
you’re grateful for. Take a moment to pay attention to what is good, positive, and beautiful as you go about your day.
• Feel your feelings. Strong feelings need to be acknowledged and released. Use loved ones for support and encouragement.
Spiritual Health
Having spiritual health gives us a moral compass and clear values from which to base our decisions. Being in a spiritually healthy place requires practice and discipline but the rewards are great. Spiritual health means having respect and appreciation. You value life, both yours and others. You live your life with a sense of purpose and can be counted on for being honest, kind, and forgiving.
To have spiritual health, Dr Dorothy Neddermeyer tells us that we need to only concentrate on four things. The four most important rituals to create spiritual health are: Prayer, Meditation, Gratitude, and Spending time in nature.
•Prayer. Your religion and faith traditions give you guidelines for how and when to pray. Follow those guidelines and incorporate prayer into your daily life
• Meditation. In its simplest form, meditation
requires you to sit quietly and comfortably with your eyes shut while paying attention to your breath. It quiets the mind and the body and keeps your spirit healthy.
• Gratitude. Noticing all of your many
blessings during the moments of your day make you more joyful and faithful even in the most difficult of time.
• Nature. Noticing water, sunsets, birds, trees, and insects connect you to the Creation and make you realize that you and your struggles are just one small part of an amazingly beautiful Whole.
I hope you will get to work on getting yourself healthy! Join me next week as we begin to talk about career and livelihood...
